The question that opens every engagement is not ‘what needs to improve.’ It is: what is this business trying to achieve — and where is CI best placed to serve that ambition? That question changes everything. The CI framework, the governance, the capability built at every level — all of it designed to support the business vision, stretch its ambitions, and generate value long after the engagement ends.

This is what enterprise CI deployment looks like when done properly. Not a project running in parallel with the business. A system embedded in the way the business runs — in how it sets strategy, measures performance, prioritises work, and builds capability.

The Story

The career began in finance — and that foundation matters more than it might seem. Understanding the numbers behind the processes, the cost of inefficiency when it compounds across an operation, the value that is quietly destroyed when decisions are made without data: this is not a background detail. It is what separates CI that delivers measurable business value from CI that generates activity.

What followed was two decades inside Shell’s major joint ventures — in Russia, the UK, and Oman — across upstream, LNG, and refining. Not as an outside advisor. As an insider, with a long-term stake in what happened next. The trust you build with people is earned over time — through the quality of what you bring, the consistency of your standard, and the knowledge that you will still be there tomorrow.

Each assignment deepened the practice and the person. Aberdeen built the methodological rigour — and the understanding that change cannot be pushed through. It has to be infectious. Muscat demonstrated what it takes to deploy CI at scale across a multi-national, multi-cultural environment. Moscow added the Board-level perspective. Independent consulting practice has made the whole sharper, more agile, more resilient.

Board member and key Shell representative inside the joint venture. Broad span of accountability: corporate governance, CI, business planning, investment management, finance operations, risk and compliance, procurement, and IT — designed to balance shareholders’ full range of interests. Ensuring the finance and compliance perspective was present in every consequential decision. A role that demanded strategic breadth and strength of character.

Oman LNG L.L.C. (Shell Joint Venture) · Muscat
Established the Lean & CI function from the ground up — reporting directly to the CEO. Defined the deployment strategy, created the CI competency framework, introduced a sustainability control dashboard, and built capability at all levels. 120+ projects. 100% CI practitioner certification rate sustained year after year. Recognised by Shell’s global CI community as a benchmark deployment.
2008 — 2015

Led Lean Six Sigma and Kaizen delivery across upstream operations in Europe. Trained and mentored practitioners and project teams to build internal CI capability. Earned LSS Master Black Belt certification — the foundation for everything that followed.

Joint Venture Accounting Manager and Project Lead for Finance Projects. First exposure to CI methodology — the discipline that became the defining thread of the career. Built the cross-cultural and bilingual capability that would later prove essential in multi-national deployment.

Accounts Payable and SAP implementation roles. Built the financial and analytical foundation — understanding business processes from the inside, long before CI was part of the vocabulary.
